Pets help to treat a depression

The Portuguese scientists consider that pets can cure a depression. According to the obtained data, presence of the fluffy friend facilitates depressive symptoms in only 12 weeks among those who don't respond to the treatment including psychotherapy and antidepressants.

One of the reasons which can explain the received results is that pets counteract one of the main symptoms of a depression – an angedoniya. Angedoniya says in inability to feel pleasure from actions which usually are pleasant and cause joy, for example, of a hobby, physical exercises or social interactions with other people. Experts add that dogs, in particular, can facilitate a depression, forcing people to be physically active and encouraging them to become participants of new social situations.

during tests researchers have analysed 33 people with a depression who didn't react to treatment earlier. The previous attempts of treatment of participants lasted from 9 to 15 months and included regular sessions of psychotherapy along with at least two rates of antidepressants. Volunteers who prior to an experiment had no pets have got dogs or cats. Within the next 12 weeks participants have continued to attend sessions of psychotherapy and to take medicine.
Depressive symptoms were estimated throughout all research – scientists asked participants on their mood, quality of a dream, sexual life and existence of suicide thoughts. It has been established that care of a pet has allowed to reduce considerably expressiveness of depressive symptoms in 8 weeks. In 12 weeks people who had four-footed favourites, have reported that they became more cheerful and to a lesser extent suffered from a depression.
